I’m Agathe Toman, 27 years old, French painter and illustrator, living between Hoosegow and Paris. I work only in black and white, using mainly Bic biro pen for my illustrations and black acrylic paint for my abstract paintings. Black emphasizes light and white. One of my quotes is If you want the stars, you have to deal with the dark, it’s a good one to think about… I work on various formats, mostly big ones and many different mediums, like papers, canvas, skateboards, surfboards and walls.
INTERVIEW
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Black and white, figurative and abstract, super detailed and textured, contrasted and tonal, blending all those opposites together and trying to create what will be, to me the optimal balance.
WHAT DOES “OFF THE WALL” MEAN TO YOU?
Where you feel unsteady, it means you’re on the right track, you’re out of your comfort zone where you can now create and live things you’ve been thinking to be unreachable. You have to forget how you have been told to do things and do it your own way. “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars,” Oscar Wilde. Some of us find the guts to go Off the Wall.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS?
I get my main inspirations from my own past and people around me today, from the emotional states they get me into. It’s about feelings, the ones that change your life and yourself – positively or negatively. Those feelings that affect the rest of your existence, the events of the most extreme manner that occur in your life. Each of my illustrations or canvases represent one thing that changed my life in a way, for good or for ill. I think that’s what art is supposed to do and this is one of the reasons I’m doing it, and showing it to pass emotions on.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF VANS?
Checkerboard Slip Ons.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE REACTIONS TO YOUR WORK?
“I love your art, your whole universe and all the emotions that it spreads. It’s not dark, [it’s] light in disguise, it’s intense.”
IF YOU COULD DO A COLLABORATIVE PIECE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Harmony Korine, Mark Oblow, Kurt Cobain and Vincent Van Gogh.
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE WORKS YOU’VE CREATED?
I guess all the canvases and illustrations on big formats. I wish I could do more, but the space needed to create them becomes an issue at some point…
