“My name is Amaia Arrazola Otaduy, born on a sunny day, on the 18th of April in 1984. I work in the world of creativity and drawing, on both small and large-scale projects. After studying advertising and public relations in Madrid, I began my career in the advertising field. I learned a lot but quickly realized I didn’t feel fulfilled and decided to start over from scratch. I left my job and changed my city, moving from Madrid to Barcelona. I applied for a grant from the Krea program in Vitoria. When I was awarded it, I signed up for a Masters in Design and Communications at the Elisava School in Barcelona. Once I finished, I started to build a portfolio of clients and small projects. I felt certain I didn’t want to return to the agency work so I set myself up as a freelancer. I began working as an illustrator, first via the contacts I had from my advertising days, then by getting into the editorial scene, and finally moving on to large-scale projects, murals, and street art. Nowadays, I divide my time between editorial projects and murals. I feel much more fulfilled now but I’m always open to trying new forms of interesting collaborations. My life has been one of logical progression. I love art, drawing, typography, screen printing, pottery, sewing, embroidery, story-telling, old things, unusual things, UFOs, unicorns, yetis and the Loch Ness monster. I have an imaginary dog.”
INTERVIEW
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Fresh and spontaneous. I don´t like things that take too much time. I don´t like to over think an image.
WHAT DOES “OFF THE WALL” MEAN TO YOU?
“Off the Wall” is a way of life.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS?
The street, colours I see every day, my friends, conversations in the subway...
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF VANS?
I think I was at high school. I don´t remember what the model was, but they were red and I was very proud of them.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE REACTIONS TO YOUR WORK?
When people see my work and feel connected. When they recognise feelings that remind them of their own life.
IF YOU COULD DO A COLLABORATIVE PIECE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Sailor Jerry!
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE WORKS YOU’VE CREATED?
This is difficult to answer because my favourite piece is always the last one I’ve done. So, my favourite now the last wall I painted in Milan, or maybe my collaboration with the socks brand called Pacific.
WHAT THINGS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR 2017/2018?
I´ve planned to travel to Miami, to the Art Basel, and I would like to go to Japan again, to visit friends and continue with the project Amaia Was Here.
